KLU MBA: Developing Leaders through an Agile game

Go to the Facilitation page

Overview

Agility has become a key focus across various industries, driving teams to adopt adaptive, iterative processes that foster flexibility and responsiveness. To help KLU MBA students understand and experience Agile principles firsthand, we created an engaging, online team-building game called Cake for Kids. This game introduces Agile concepts in an interactive and enjoyable way, providing participants with hands-on experience in planning, reflecting, and continuous improvement.

Challenge

How might we help people experience the Agile method while learning and enjoying it?

While Agile methodologies are widely recognised, they can sometimes feel abstract and complex, especially for those unfamiliar with their principles. The challenge was to create a fun, immersive experience that allowed participants to grasp Agile fundamentals through active participation, rather than theoretical learning. The game needed to be accessible, engaging, and effective in demonstrating core Agile practices.

Approach

To meet this challenge, we designed Cake for Kids, an online game available on MURAL and Miro, where participants form teams to fulfill “orders” for birthday packages for kids. This playful scenario allowed participants to engage with key Agile concepts, such as planning, executing, reflecting in retrospectives, and improving continuously based on feedback.

During the game, participants worked through various Agile activities, including sprint planning, delivering tasks in iterations, and participating in retrospective sessions to assess what went well and what could be improved. The game’s structure encourages a cycle of learning, reflecting, and adapting, all while creating a collaborative and enjoyable experience.

This game has been played by teams worldwide, including MBA students at KLU University and partner teams from MURAL. Additionally, our partner Rational Games commended the game as a fun and effective way to teach teamwork and Agile concepts.

Outcome

The Cake for Kids game successfully provided participants with an authentic Agile experience, bringing theory to life through collaborative gameplay. MBA students at KLU University left the session with a solid grasp of Agile fundamentals and practical insights into how these principles could be applied in their future careers. The feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the game’s effectiveness in making Agile concepts accessible, enjoyable, and memorable.
