Overview
Agile mindsets are best understood by doing — not by reading a slide deck. To help KLU MBA students and global teams experience Agile in action, we designed and facilitated Cake for Kids — a playful, online team game that simulates Agile collaboration using visual collaboration tools like MURAL and Miro. Participants work in sprints to fulfil birthday “orders,” learning how to plan, adapt, and reflect as a team.
Originally created for the KLU MBA programme, the game has since been played by teams worldwide. It remains one of our most effective tools for introducing iterative thinking, fast feedback loops, and shared decision-making in a safe, engaging environment.
Challenge
How might we help people experience Agile principles in a way that feels collaborative, memorable — and fun?
While Agile frameworks are widely adopted, they often feel abstract or overly technical to those new to them. Our goal was to create an immersive experience that allowed participants to live Agile values — like collaboration, iteration, and reflection — without jargon or complexity. It needed to work online, be culturally inclusive, and spark team energy.
Approach
We designed and facilitated Cake for Kids as an interactive, online game structured around key Agile rituals:
- Sprint Planning – Teams quickly align on how to tackle their birthday package “orders.”
- Delivery Rounds – In each round, participants simulate sprints to deliver value under time pressure.
- Retrospectives – Between rounds, teams reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and how to improve — just like in real Agile teams.
Built on Miro and MURAL, the game uses visual collaboration to keep everyone engaged and aligned. It’s not about winning — it’s about improving together, one sprint at a time.
Outcome
The game brought Agile to life — helping participants internalise core principles in just one session. Feedback was consistently enthusiastic:
- KLU MBA students left with a practical understanding of Agile, beyond the theory.
- Teams highlighted how fun and engaging the format was, while still offering deep insights into team dynamics and process improvement.
- Facilitators observed greater openness, faster collaboration, and real-time mindset shifts.
More than just a game, Cake for Kids is a tool we use in to build the foundations of collaboration and agility.
